The standard approach to monitoring is to go deep in one area first (usually networks) and then work your way around to other areas.

But systems are too interconnected for that to work. Issues in one area usually have flow-on effects to others, and depth in one area can't help you see where they started.

That’s why basic end-to-end monitoring tends to be more helpful day-to-day than depth in one area.
